I’m honored to have these two haiku chosen by Editor Beate Conrad for publication in October 2025’s Issue 35 of Chrysanthemum.

black moon
the rook and its shadow
become one
A new moon so black the distinction between reality and illusion dissolves in the darkness. It can symbolize connection, impermanence, or the absence of light or definition, leading to a deeper sense of oneness.

winter graveyard
the icy wind
is forgiven
The juxtaposition worked into these seven words points to the common interpretation of an icy wind often being described as unforgiving, yet is forgiven in light of the graveyard setting where even more harsh realities of sorrow and death are found. Forgiveness, letting go of resentment toward life’s cruelties, suffering, or even death itself. It implies a quiet resolution, perhaps finding meaning or closure in the face of desolation.
