Based in New Zealand, Editor-in-Chief Graham Bates and his team consistently put out one of the finest journal’s of haiku, tanka, haiga and haibun. I’m honored to have three haiku published in Kokako Issue 43, September 2025.
ant caravan
I once carried dreams
with such urgency
I’ve often watched endless streams of industrious ants on nature shows, marveling at their purposeful, orderly work. My haiku contrasts this image with the pursuit of personal goals, both noble and essential.
autumn wind
learning from the leaves
when to let go
I relish the idea of how diversely this haiku may resonate with each reader. Releasing pain, stress, hope, or something already lost—whatever the interpretation, I trust every reader will discover something profound to reflect upon.
winter hush
a quiet invitation
to linger
One of my favorite aspects of winter is the serene stillness that follows a snowfall. This tranquil calm invites you to pause, savor the moment, or immerse yourself in its peace, much like the figure in the image, wandering a path lined with scenic pines toward deeper tranquility.
