LEAF – Journal of The Daily Haiku

I’m excited to debut in LEAF – Journal of The Daily Haiku with these three haiku selected for Issue Seven, published August 2025. Heartfelt thanks to Editor Ravi Kiran, Founder of The Daily Haiku Amanda White and everyone involved for creating such a remarkable publication brimming with exceptional poetry.

afterglow
a black rose becomes
the night

Afterglow, the lingering radiance in the sky after sunset, and a black rose merging with the night. A reminder that beauty and goodness endure, even when unseen or shining in the darkest places.

chrysalis phase
never trying
never failing

A chrysalis encases a caterpillar during its metamorphosis into a butterfly or moth, shielding it from external threats as it transforms to realize its full potential. This image reminded me of people who choose to remain in their own cocoons, seeking safety over facing the world. By avoiding risk, they escape failure and pain—but also miss out on living a full life. They grow increasingly comfortable in their sheltered existence, reluctant to venture out or, worse, retreating after a bad experience. Sadly, I see this pattern far too often.

distant thunder
remembering our kiss
in summer rain

The words I chose for this haiku are meant to convey the experience of remembering a kiss from long ago, shared with such spontaneity and passion that two people ignored the rain, lost in a moment of thundering intensity. The kind that only comes with romance and connection. It invites readers to reflect on whether it recalls a current love or a longing for someone from their past.
