Looks Like You’ve Seen a Ghost

“Are you there?”

*no answer*

Why should I be surprised? I’m peering in from the edge without knowing how far I’ll have to go. The path before me leads through a legion of oaks, vanishing out of sight. No choice but to proceed.

Beyond the first turn, I navigate a maze twisting in every direction. The way is cluttered but doesn’t hinder my progress. It feels natural. Now, surrounded by oaks, I sense the light dimming as cooler air touches my face. After a while, I take a short rest.

“Are you there?”

*no answer*

I keep walking. There’s little to see in any direction except towering oaks, slivers of sunlight piercing the canopy, and the winding path. The sun ought to be on my left, but it’s not. I’ve lost my bearings. Cold air pokes my skin. I’ve journeyed far.

“Are you there?”

*no answer*

If I turned around, I’d never escape before nightfall. The trees stand so thick, only a faint glow shimmers in the frigid air. My goosebumps have faded, though. I must be accustomed to it. This place, wherever it is, feels strangely familiar.

Silent.
Peaceful.
Hallowed.
Lost.
Found.

“Are you there?”

*I’m here.*

Weaving together the elements of a successful haibun is a true passion of mine. I love creating stories that are open to interpretation, giving readers the space to decide what they mean for themselves. If a hundred people read my work and walk away with a hundred different impressions, all while being entertained in the process, I consider that a success.

I’m honored to have this haibun included alongside those of my peers in the December 2025 issue of Drifting Sands Haibun.
